Dry ice blasting cleaning mold from floor joists in a residential crawl space

Residential Restoration

Dry ice blasting for Northwest Arkansas homes

Dry ice blasting cleans framing, joists and masonry without water, chemicals or grit. The pellets sublimate on contact, so the only thing left to clean up is what came off the surface.

That matters most in crawl spaces and attics, where adding water to remove mold is exactly the wrong move, and after fires, where blasting char off framing with an abrasive would remove sound wood along with it. Dry ice is non-abrasive, non-conductive and leaves no secondary waste stream.

It is also fast. A crawl space that would take days of hand scrubbing is typically a one-day job, and the surface is dry and ready for encapsulation or sealer immediately after.

How dry ice blasting works

  1. Evaluation

We confirm dry ice is the right method for your substrate and contaminant.

  2. Containment and filtration

The area is sealed and HEPA filtration is run to capture removed material.

  3. Blasting

Compressed air accelerates dry ice pellets that lift contamination on contact and sublimate to gas.

  4. Collection and treatment

Removed debris is HEPA vacuumed and the surface is treated or sealed as the job requires.

Scope

Why homeowners choose dry ice

  • No water added to an already damp crawl space
  • No sand, soda or grit to collect afterward
  • Non-abrasive: sound wood and mortar stay intact
  • Safe around wiring and mechanical systems
  • Surface is dry and ready for sealer immediately

Questions we get asked

Does dry ice blasting kill mold?

It removes mold growth from the surface mechanically and the extreme cold damages what remains. We follow with an antimicrobial and, critically, correct the moisture source, otherwise it returns.

Is it safe indoors?

Yes, with ventilation and CO2 monitoring, which we provide. Containment keeps the work isolated from occupied space.

How does the cost compare to soda blasting?

Per hour it runs higher, but there is no media cleanup and the job finishes faster, which usually narrows or erases the difference. We will quote both when either would work.
